Summer Vacation
We were lucky to get two weeks away on the boat this summer and we decided to head north.
Our first day was a big one, we left at 6am, motored to Porlier Pass (~2.5 hours) and then sailed for another 7.5 hours all the way to Jedidiah Island. Â Jedidiah is home to several old abandoned buildings and orchards, some feral sheep and goats, and an infinite number of mosquitos.
Here we are on our first night there :
The next day, only somewhat weakened by blood loss, we went exploring (some of us in finer style than others).
This is the old homestead on Jedidiah, not a bad place to live, especially if you don’t like neighbours!
We went fishing at Jedidiah, but only managed to snag one poor surprised crab.
All tucked in for the night!
After Jedidiah we let the southeasterly winds blow us north along Texada to Powell River. There we enjoyed all the amenities of the big city including a new dessert favourite: worms and dirt (ice cream with cookies crumbs and gummy worms).
From Powell River we headed to the lovely Copeland Islands.
Here’s Laika doing what she did at every stop; making sure that no bits of driftwood left the beach for long,
In the Copelands we met up with our friends on Rampart and sailed up to Teakerne Arm together on West Redonda Island.
Note: Supposedly with a digital camera you can just keep taking photos until you get the perfect one.  However, if you’re hoping for a shot of 3 five-year-olds smiling nicely at the same time, you’d better have packed an extra memory card and a lunch.
Here’s Laika chasing another stick, this time at Cassel Lake.
From West Redonda we moved on to Cortes Island.
First Von Donop Inlet
where we spent a peaceful night, note where we put 5-year-olds who say ‘poo’ more than five times in a single sentence.
and then Manson’s Landing. Â Manson’s Landing was great, they had ice cream, a lake, a grocery store, and a community hall with a tire swing.
There was also a lagoon to explore by dinghy.
A nice anchorage
And lots of these guys (moonsnails). Â Doug snorkled around the boat and caught a few live ones that we could look at for a while in a bucket.
After Manson’s Landing we went to Oyster River, Hornby, Gabriola, Decourcy and finally home. Â All in all a great trip.
See you next year!
